Today, I just want to talk a bit about how we can turn obstacles into an opportunity.
We live in a time where it’s very easy to get discouraged and think that only the wealthy can have opportunity and success.
We seem to have a knack for dwelling on the negative, not the positive. We have to be taught to be positive thinkers and many people even pay to hop on someone’s course or community just to be part of the positive mindset and get help thinking and believing that a positive future is possible and obtainable.
And when it comes to our dreams it can be easy to talk ourselves our of the very dream we thought up in the first place.
I used to have a business in IT and half of the business was doing custom websites. When I saw that there were a lot of people making the shift to the build it yourself website platforms I was thinking that I would lose a lot of website business… and I did.. but I did because I let it happen…I did because I believed it would happen. .. I thought (and believed) web designers aren’t needed anymore. I didn’t pivot with the times.
But I could have turned it around to be ‘now that more people are using the build it yourself platform, more people will eventually need to have a website developers and SEO work done on their website’ I could have said ‘now is the time for me to be a WordPress expert so I can encourage people to not pay for a custom site anymore.’ (I eventually did, but it was a long time coming for me)
If you’re in the home decorating or remodeling space and you see that more people are watching the DIY shows and you conclude that home decorators and a handyman isn’t needed as much you could turn something like that around to be ‘SINCE more people are watching DIY shows, more people are into home improvement and handymen are needed even more’.
You can make a lot of excuses why your business won’t fly OR you can come up with a lot of reasons why it WILL succeed.
Right now there are a lot of people that need you and your product or service. What are you doing about it? How can you meet the need?
Do you really want what you say you want? Or do you just want to dream. Are you willing to take the action and put the effort in to make this dream happen?
Are you willing to at least try?
Will your business take off and fly automatically because you have all these flowery thoughts? No. But positive thinking will get you positive results. Negative thinking will get you negative results.
Right now there are people out there calling others to get what you cold offer, better. There are people paying more to receive less.
Dreaming about starting a business? Start your business. But don’t start on a whim. Start with a solid plan in place.
Timing is important, and the time is now. You don’t have to officially start now, but you can start now in your head. Make it official. Tell someone.
Not sure how to dream? I was raised in a home where we didn’t dream about success or money or even a better life someday. If you went to college you might get a good job. I had to learn how to dream.
But as you work on your dream, make sure that it’s still in the realm of reality. Saying ‘I want to be a gazillionaire’ isn’t reality and is just a waste of everyone’s time.
But if you say ‘my dream is that when I retire, I want to live in the Carolina’s on the coast in a house with a view of the ocean making $10K/month in passive income.’ Now that’s a dream that has a good chance at becoming reality. Will it be a lot of work? Yes. Will your dream come to you? no. you will have to work hard, stay focused and to not be discouraged.
But it’s just an example of a dream. And this podcast is all about starting a small business and turning it into a reality so the dreams I’m helping people with are in that realm.
But lets take your big dream and break it down into smaller chunks with a timeline so that we can actually see it as a plan and not just a dream.
Not sure how to plan? Not sure what to plan for? Well in the small business realm, we need to start our dream planning with some basic components..
- · a product and services plan
- · a marketing plan
- · a financial plan
- · a sales plan
- · a growth plan
- · a scale plan
- · a plan to sell your business
These are things that can be worked out one step at a time. Now, also part of the plan should be a way to change the plan as time goes on. Because after you finish your business plan, it’s not over.
The business plan is like saying ‘I want to travel north.’ but then as you go north, you’ll find that its ok to go northeast for a little while because there’s something you want to pick up or someone you want to meet and then get back on track for going north again. Give yourself the freedom to tweak the plan a bit here and there as you go because you’ll learn things along the way that can make the original plan better.
Are you a little older maybe and sort of finding it hard to come up with a dream you can believe in? I get it. My best dream came after 50. My best dream came after my deepest low in life. But when I was in the pit I started looking up. I started to hope again. I saw smaller milestones come and go and had hope that bigger things were possible.
So if you’re considering a later in life pivot, or if you’re in the middle of one now, don’t be discouraged thinking that the best years are in the past, believe that the best years are coming and that this year will be the best one yet.
I keep saying this and I apologize if you’ve heard me say it before, but I believe that our biggest obstacle is our own thoughts. We need to break out of our own mental jail cell and take the door off so we don’ t get trapped in there again.
Friends, stay encouraged, follow your dreams and don’t give up!
