Helping you start a personal brand business later in life.

Welcome… The purpose of this small business blog is to inspire and equip those that desire to follow their dream of having their own personal brand business and to overcome the myriad of obstacles that could potentially prevent a speedy startup launch.

If you’re making this self employment pivot later in life and you’re not quite sure where to start, there’s content specifically for you! I’ll be dealing with that topic in detail as well, from my personal experiences, so you can make the pivot a lot easier and with more clarity.

These relevant and helpful articles will give you step by step instructions, using practical, but proven methods that will produce actual, measurable results. We’ll go through the Dream, Plan and Launch process and turn ‘Wantrepreneurs’ into ‘Entrepreneurs’.

Life’s a journey…enjoy the ride.

Small Business Startup Tips and Tools

The Four Types of Entrepreneurs

Plan

When it’s finally time to put your toe in the entrepreneurial waters, you’ll eventually find that you’ll need to make a decision. A decision of which type of entrepreneur you’ll ultimately be for this current venture that you’re thinking of starting.

Now this doesn’t mean that once you make a decision, it’s a once and for all decision until the end of time (and a little longer).

Again, I’m just referring, for this venture only, to ‘which type of entrepreneur you’ll be’ for the idea you want to launch that’s right in front of you.

The Solopreneur Challenge: What do I focus on?

Dream

If you’re in the planning stages of starting a solopreneur type business, or maybe you already launched one, you’ll more than likely be having the same thoughts and questions that all the other solopreneurs have.

Questions like:
• How do I start?
• What should I focus on?
• How can I possibly get all this stuff done?
• What about all that techie stuff that I’m supposed to know and do?

Well, first of all, I’d just like to say, ‘You’re not alone.’

What is a Personal Brand?

Development

Well friends, I’m sure that there are a lot of people that already have this personal brand stuff figured out, but there may be some of you listening that need a bit more clarification to what all this ‘personal brand’ stuff is and how they should think of it.

Because for me, when I started out, the meaning has sort of shifted a bit over the past 20 years and to be honest, I really like the way the definition evolved over time.

chaos

How to Avoid Chaos in Starting a Personal Brand Business

Plan

We live in a time where information and influence comes as easy as breathing.

Whatever we want to know or learn about, we can pursue it and either read or watch videos on it. No topic seems to be untapped.

But because we have all of this information at our fingertips, we can easily get information overload. And with all this information, get lost in the process of what to do with it.

time

When is the right time to start a business?

Plan

Is there a right time, a right opportunity, a right situation, a right…answer?

Starting a business has a lot of advantages. And when people need other options for income because of internal or external forces around them are either failing or just not meeting the need, or if they just want more opportunity in general, then starting a business is a good idea.

In this post, we’ll be talking about the right time and the wrong time to start a business.

when reality sets in

When Reality Sets In

Launch

It’s great to have a dream. Right? I think we all have some sort of dream that we’d like to accomplish someday.

And having that dream of a better life is always a good thing. Because not everyone can have those positive thoughts and ambitions. Not everyone even knows how to dream big…or even dream at all about a better life.

I know I wasn’t brought up to think that way. It never even came up. I’m certain of it. My dad didn’t graduate high school and my mom never went to college, but somehow, I really don’t know how, she learned how to take shorthand and become a secretary at the Towns City Hall.

But for some, dreaming can come harder than others. For some, it can be something that maybe exists in the back of their head, but if it seeps up toward the surface, it can quickly get squashed down to where it came from…the depths of the inner conscience.

Why You Shouldn’t Start a Podcast

Plan

Podcasts seem to be everywhere. Right?

They’re being played in the subway, in cafes, in the gym, wherever you go. And you can listen to them everywhere, whenever you want.
I’ve been listening to them for about 15 years… back when they just started. Back when they weren’t even called podcasts but ‘audioblogs’.

There was a small business show out of the UK that I would download to the computer and transfer to my mp3 player so I could listen as I walk around.

So I go way back with listening to a lot of different type shows. Educational, entertainment, small business, corporate management, non profit management shows… the list goes on and on.

And I’ve seen a lot of them come and go over the years. But recently, it seems that more of them are coming and going.

making an impact

Become a Person of Impact Later in Life

Development

Have you ever thought of reinventing yourself? Maybe you’ve been in a situation that forced you to do that. Maybe you’re thinking about doing it voluntarily.

But why would anyone even think about doing that? Why would anyone want to?

Well, I’ve been in situations before where I knew I wasn’t living my best life…at all, and I just wanted to do something about it. It’s sort of that ‘ok’ lifestyle. Just working in an ok job and getting an ok paycheck. Just settling. Just accepting. Just paying the bills.

But friends, there’s a better way. There’s a better life out there…for you. For many of us, we live in countries that still offer opportunity and a hope of a better future.

So don’t settle. Don’t settle for an ok life in an ok job. Because being ok is safe. Being ok keeps you in your comfort zone. Being ok doesn’t rock the boat and make any waves.

three business people

Three Secrets to Startup Success

Plan

Most startups fail after 5 years.

Why? Mainly because of cash flow problems. There’s more going out, than coming in. And, usually, not keeping expenses in check was the culprit.

But I wanted to go over how you can increase your chances for success for your business.

There’s a never ending supply of the things we ‘need’ or don’t need, but still purchase.

But overall, putting the money part aside, there are certain ‘traits’ that people have, that have proven themselves over time, to be ingredients of the 3 S’s. The ‘Secret Sauce of Success’.

So in this article, I’ll be going over these three attributes of having ‘The Right Stuff’ for being an Entrepreneur.

What am I calling the ‘Big Three’?

1. Believing in yourself
2. Willing to get help
3. Not giving up

regret

Missed Opportunity? 5 Ways to Bounce Back

Pivot

For those of us that are over 40…or 50, I’m sure you don’t have to think too long to remember some sort of opportunity you had that you either missed, didn’t recognize right away, or just plain passed up. Maybe you even blew it a few times on those opportunities that you did see coming and took action on, but…it just didn’t work out for some reason or another.

But sometimes, it happens, where we see something staring at us right in the face and we don’t act on it for some reason. That happened to me back around 2001 where I had someone offer me my dream job and I turned it down. Why? I wanted to be in business for myself. And I can remember hanging up the phone when I turned down that job offer thinking to myself ‘what did I just do?’

I just quit a job that went sour after 4 buyouts and the management was terrible. I was tired of being in that corporate environment where it’s ‘just do it or your fired’. I really needed to see what I could make happen for myself in my own business. To make money for me instead of making it for someone else.

But as we got on in life and hit closer to 50 or 60, it can be easy for us to think that it may be too late to act on that dream, or that offer that someone gave to us about starting a business or to partner up with someone else in their business venture.

success

What Does Success Look Like For Your Business?

Launch

Business success is different for everyone. Creating a strategy and outlining what success looks like for you gives you a way to measure your success. The 2 ingredients to the recipe of success are hard work and persistence, no matter what business you’re in.

Just showing up…not quitting, is half the battle. Many new business owners start with a goal of “being successful.” But what does “being successful” really mean? The truth is, is that small business success is different for everybody. And, as with everything else for your business, it’s up to you to define what success looks like for you. What one person would call a failure, another person would call it a success.

What do I mean by that? Well, for example, if the goal for the year was $250K in profits, in your sole proprietor business, but you fell short of the goal and ended up with ONLY $100K in profits. Some would call that a failure. But from where I’m sitting, I would not call that a failure.

decision to make

Starting a Part Time vs. Full Time Business

Plan

Here are some things to think about when trying to decide the right path for you and your business.

So, there’s pros and cons to every decision, that’s nothing new. And I’ve done both sides of the coin here in having my business be full time and part time, based on the economy and the market needs…also my family needs at the time.
So I think I have enough experience from both angles to talk about this and hopefully help you to have more clarity when you’re making your decisions.

Even if, ideally, you plan to run your business full-time, starting it up on a part-time basis can offer some significant advantages:
• It reduces your risk because you can rely on income and benefits from your full-time job and lets you have some additional ramp up time.
• It gives you more time to work on your 3 P’s (products, pitch and price)
• You’ll have more time to test the market and get a better feel of how easy or hard building this business might be
• More time to niche down to position yourself to stand out better instead of blending in
• It also allows your business to grow more gradually

you have an idea

6 Steps to Turn Your Business Idea Into a Reality

Plan

You never know where it’ll hit you. You have a great idea for a new business and you’re really excited about it.

It might happen when you’re walking down the street or when you’re just laying in bed or just driving down the road: a new business idea hits you, and it doesn’t let you go!

While you might feel the urge to just drop everything else and jump on it, you should really take some time to think this through, rationally, to make sure that you’re not going to be spending a huge amount of time and money on something that doesn’t end up working out.

So, how can you test your business idea without going all in right away? What steps can you take to validate the proof of concept and avoid while not breaking the bank (or maxing out your credit card)?

who are you? Do you really want to know?

Entrepreneur Personality Traits

Development

I’d like to take some time to talk about getting to know ourselves better and the benefits of using a personality test so we can focus on our strengths instead of developing our weaknesses.

Because when we focus on our strengths, our opportunities are the greatest. When we try to develop our weaknesses, we can get bogged down in the muck of…well, all things that are mucky.

We’re brought up through an educational system that focuses on what we did wrong and how we fell short.

We live in a society that has a never ending focus on people’s shortcomings.

But the Gallup Organization did extensive research and found that people have several times more potential for growth when they invest energy in developing their strengths instead of trying to improve their weaknesses.

how big is your comfort zone

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

Development

Simply put, your comfort zone is a behavioral space where your activities and behaviors fit a routine and pattern that minimizes stress and risk. It provides a state of mental security. You benefit in obvious ways: regular happiness, low anxiety, and reduced stress.

So, our comfort zone, is our safe place. Whatever ‘normal’ looks like for you, whatever you’re not even thinking about changing — that’s your comfort zone.

Each time you move into a new zone, you have to go through a little fear, a little anxiety, because you have to think differently about yourself and what you’re capable of.

You will come across obstacles in life-fair and unfair. And you will discover, time and time again, that what matters most is not what these obstacles are but how we see them, how we react to them, and whether we keep our composure. You will learn that this reaction determines how successful we will be in overcoming- or possibly thriving because of them.

podcast mini-course

How to Start A Podcast

Development

In episode 39 of the Podcast, I discussed the need to have a platform for your voice and why the option of having a Podcast was critical for the life and growth of your business.
And in this article, I’ll be going over the steps on how I started this podcast and try to provide enough content for you so that you’ll at least feel more comfortable starting your own, or talking to someone on how to get your own up and running.

1 Research
2 Passion
3 Motive
4 What soundtrack do you listen to in your head?

It took longer at first, but things get faster over time and you work out your own tweaks that helps you to streamline the process.
Is all this a lot of work? Yes. Does is take up a significant amount of time? You bet. But I still believe that the benefits outweigh the time commitment pitfalls.
I’m building an international voice.

And so can you.

your new voice

How to Gain Influence

Development

In this article, I’d like to take your story…your message to another level. Today, I’d like to continue the theme of how you can have a significant influence and impact in people’s lives, and promote yourself, promote your business, all through the process of helping people.

Now you may be in the startup phase, or about to be in the startup phase and have been thinking about this for awhile and are wondering what to do next. You may be wondering where to land on this topic of influence and impact and you know that it’s time to take some sort of action.

You can have your own podcast. You can have a national and international voice. You can have a worldwide influence. If others can do it and have huge success with their podcast then there’s a good possibility that you can too.

But you’ll need a plan.

telling your story to have impact and influence

The Power of Your Personal Story

Development

The goal of every business is sales. Without it, the business dies. Plain and simple. You need to sell your products or services one way or another. There are a lot of ways to do this, but there’s currently a huge gap between your target market and you and you need to close it. You need to build a bridge and then get them to walk over it.
Normally, it takes a few times for people to warm up to you or your product or service and help them through the sales process. If you’ve been listening to this podcast recently, you’ll already know about the ‘know/like/trust/try/buy’ process. Simple, but not easy.
So how do we close that gap so that people will buy our product? What bridges do we need to build? Do you just talk about your expertise and how great you are? Do you just talk about your products or services and how great they are? Or is there another way that’s proven to be successful?
There is, and it’s in the use of stories. Your story.

Taking the Next Step- A New Choice

Dream

Making a decision
I mentioned in a much earlier episode that I made a later in life pivot.. a few of them actually and so I sort of know what it’s like to face change and to step out of the comfort zone.
Now for some, change can happen in a number of ways:
• It could be voluntary for many reasons
o Maybe you want to retire with purpose and you’ve had this idea in your head for awhile
o Maybe you’re already retired either from the military or the workforce and you want to try life 2.0 but this time doing something that makes you feel alive
• Or maybe this life change you’re going through isn’t voluntary and you’re scrambling a bit to figure some things out
o It could be because of a job loss
o It could be because of a divorce
o It could be a number of reasons
Either way, voluntary change or involuntary change, it’s still change. And that’s something that a lot of people have a hard time with.
But if nothing changes, then everything will stay the same right?

quality-copywriting

Copywriting-Essential Building Block #7-Laying a Strong Foundation to Your Business

Plan

I’ve found that, over the years, it can be easy to focus on the more tangible parts of a business. The parts that we can see and feel. The parts that we can have a more direct impact on, like:
• Sales
• Marketing
• Products/Services
The list can go on and on. But there’s one aspect of a successful business that I think gets overlooked time and time again; copywriting.
Not just any type of copywriting, but using words to move prospects or even the casual observer through the ‘know/like/trust/try/buy’ process.. and then we’ll add to that ‘repeat’ as well. Because as business owners, what do we really want? Sales? Yes.. but we also want repeat customers.

brand_identity

Branding-Essential Building Block #6-Laying a Strong Foundation to Your Business

Plan

A personal brand is not just about having a website with your name on it, although that’s certainly part of it.

Your personal brand is how you present yourself, both online and offline, to your ideal audience. Your personal brand is the image you put forth. It’s what you stand for. Your values. What you’re all about. The core of who you are as a person.

It’s the combination of your values, unique skills, experiences, stories, personality, and image, all presented authentically to your audience.

Every person is now a brand. Everyone can constantly put themselves out in front of their audience. Everyone can add value to their audience. With everything you share with your audience, you’re building your brand.

The Marketing Plan-Essential Building Block #5-Laying a Strong Foundation to Your Business

Plan

Marketing has gone through quite an evolution over the past 20 years or so.

With so many businesses transitioning to Internet based products and services, it’s forced businesses to rethink their approach and what’s actually effective for modern consumers.

Marketing, in today’s terms is: Getting someone who has a need to go through the ‘know/like/trust/try/buy’ process.

I like to think of it this way. Marketing is serving and sales is a relationship.

The Email List-Essential Building Block #4- Laying a Strong Foundation to Your Business

Plan

What is an email list?
An email list is a special list of names and email addresses of people who gave you permission to send them updates and promotions from your business.
Many expert marketers say their biggest mistake was not building an email list when they first started out.
Why build an email list?
Because email subscribers joined your email list from your website and verified their identity by clicking on a link (double-optin), they are very interested in what you have to offer. This is why they’re more likely to convert into paying customers.
Usually an email list gets 10 times higher conversions than social media campaigns.
Here is a short list of the benefits of having an email list…

successful business

Products & Services-Essential Building Block #3-Laying a Strong Foundation to Your Business

Plan

The next building block you’ll need to lay a strong foundation to your business is the Website.
But before we talk about products and services, we need to talk about sales. You gotta sell your stuff. Whatever it is. Products or services, you need sales.
Selling. Yucky stuff! Right? I mean, who REALLY likes to sell stuff? I’d rather be creating content or working on the next new product. I’ve got better things to do than sell stuff.
Well, let’s think about something for a second. Sales is what keeps businesses alive. So what do we do when we need to sell but we don’t like to sell?
We help people.

website

Website-Essential Building Block #2-Laying a Strong Foundation to Your Business

Plan

For far too long, people have been creating websites that just end up being another expense. Another black hole for the budget. But done correctly, and with some proper planning, your website can be built with the theme of: ‘make me money’.

To have a basic but professional design that doesn’t distract but enhance the copy that will encourage and entice the person to ultimately buy your product or services. Or at the very least again, work through the know/like/trust/try/buy process.

following after your dreams

Vision-Essential Building Block #1-Laying a Strong Foundation to Your Business

Dream

Vision or Dream?
So..What’s the difference between dream and vision? Aren’t they basically the same thing?
Dream and vision are not the same thing.
A dream is a more lofty idea you have in your head without a lot of details. I’d like to retire and live in a more southern state where it’s warmer and have a decent retirement income from my business, or the sale of my business. No details. Exciting, but painless.
A vision is a dream solidified. Take your dream and attach a strategy. Now add the goals and tactics you’ll need to perform the strategy. Now you have a vision.

Be Successful With A Positive Mindset

Dream

We live in a time where it’s very easy to get discouraged and think that only the wealthy can have opportunity and success.

We seem to have a knack for dwelling on the negative, not the positive. We have to be taught to be positive thinkers and many people even pay to hop on someone’s course or community just to be part of the positive mindset and get help thinking and believing that a positive future is possible and obtainable.

And when it comes to our dreams it can be easy to talk ourselves our of the very dream we thought up in the first place.

Does your dream seem like a nightmare?

Dream

Does the task of starting a business seem either vague, or daunting, or expensive, or something that just takes too much time or money? Does your dream seem more like a nightmare?

Does any one…or ALL of these things stop you in your tracks so that you WANT to start a business, but you just can’t seem to get excited about it and actually DO something?

marketing

8 Ways to Market Your Startup Business Online

Launch

As we all know, marketing our business to potential customers is a necessary part of having a successful business.

The issue with traditional advertising, such as newspaper, radio, and television ads, is that they can be expensive and may produce little or even no return on investment.

Advertising online may be a better option. You can track the effectiveness of each advertisement. Then, you can focus your marketing strategies on the techniques that are the most profitable. Plus, there are options for online advertising that don’t cost you any money at all!

Winning the SEO Game

Development

If you want to get traffic to your website, it’s important to understand Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Up until about 2015, if you created a blog post with an interesting title and an eye-grabbing picture, you could bet that a lot of people would click on it when they saw it on Facebook.

Since then, however, things have changed dramatically. Facebook realized that they were basically giving free publicity to businesses. So, Facebook started making it much more difficult for businesses to grab people’s attention. If a business wanted to get a lot of exposure, they would have to pay for it.

The end result of all this is that it’s now super tough to get as much traffic from social media. You either need to have a massive following or be willing to shell out a fair amount of cash.

This is why SEO matters so much.

Building a Personal Brand and Becoming an Influencer

Launch

A personal brand is much more than a flashy logo or a color palette. A personal brand goes far beyond having a nice-looking business card.

Growing Your Business Using Social Media

Launch

Many business owners think that if they simply start posting on social media, they’ll be successful and attract new customers. But it doesn’t work this way. In order to build your business through social media, it’s essential to have a strategy for engaging with your audience.

It’s not enough to post across a variety of social media networks. Without a definitive plan for how you’re going to use social media, you probably won’t get the results that you want.

How to Turn Your Passion Into Profit

Dream

We all have things that we absolutely love to do, But you don’t think you could ever make money from your passion.

Thanks to the internet, almost any passion can be turned into a profitable side hustle. You can make money doing the things that you love the most. Yep. You can turn your passion project into a profitable project.

Of course, all this raises the critical question: how do you start a side hustle? In this article, I’ll give you a road map for turning your passion into a profitable side hustle. It’ll guide you, step-by-step, to making money doing what you love.

The main difference between coaching and consulting is that coaching pulls out answers from the client while consulting tells the client what to do.

A consultant is usually an SME, a subject matter expert who can provide technical and professional advice to clients based on their situation. A coach, however, helps clients find their own clarity and answers, and helps them to understand how to move forward in achieving their goals and grow personally.

When you coach, you explore possibilities. When you consult, you provide possibilities.

Having a niche is important because if you try to cater to everyone your overall marketing and message won’t speak to anyone. Your niche can also be linked to who your ideal client is. So, it’s important you have a targeted niche market and speak to a customer or client in a certain way which they can really relate to.
